By Faith, not by Sight!

“… God, who also has given unto us the earnest of the Spirit. Therefore we are always confident, knowing that, whilst we are at home in the body, we are absent from the Lord. (For we walk by faith, not by sight)”. (2 Corinthians 5:5b-7/KJV).

“For we walk by faith not by sight”. This concept seems to be parallel to the idea that “we now see through a glass darkly; but then face to face” in 1 Corinthians 13:12.

As you make your way towards a peak of a mountain in South-East Germany you may spend considerable time walking along some path through the woods. You are only surrounded by trees. You do not see much more than the trees surrounding you.

You cannot see where you are going. You just need to trust your guide or perhaps a map you have with you. At times some geometric symbols on little pieces of metal fixed to a tree will also show you that you are on the right way.

Similarly in the Christian life you often are surrounded by all kinds of circumstances. You often are not as much aware of Jesus as you would like to be. You may have some idea of what your heavenly goal would be like. But you tend to be pretty much occupied by problems of this earthly life.

In the mountains of south-eastern Germany you often have pretty narrow ways. You can only walk them one after the other.

This reminds me of the words of Jesus. He has said that the way that leads to life is a pretty narrow way. He said that not many would find that way. (Cf. Matthew 7:14).

Christian life is not always easy, nor is Christian living. Oftentimes you may feel you are still far away from the Lord.

All you can do is trust in God’s word. Consider his commandments. Comfort yourself thinking of his promises.  Pray for the Holy Spirit to apply the words of the Holy Bible to your own heart.

About christenfindenruhe

On my new English blog "Motivation of Christian Love" I am sharing my thoughts on 1 Corinthians 13 and other biblical texts.
